Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency

If you and your pet are having a veterinary emergency please follow these steps:

  • Call Us In Advance - During our normal hours of operation call us straight away. For after-hours care, contact the emergency animal hospital listed above to let them know you are on the way.
  • Follow Instructions Provided - When you call to let the emergency pet hospital know you are coming, they might give your instructions to help you provide first aid or help make your animal as comfortable as possible. Carefully follow these instructions.
  • Remain Calm - Stay calm and take extra care when around your pet. When animals are in pain they often respond negatively towards anyone that is trying to help them and may bite or scratch.
  • Bring Your Pet In For Care - Do not put yourself in harm's way! Take your pet safely to our Toledo veterinary clinic or the after-hours emergency vet location above.

    • Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
    • Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
    • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
    • Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)

  • How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

Our Toledo animal hospital operates similarly to a human doctor's office—it can be unpredictable and you might need to wait.

We cannot predict what cases we will see and when they will arrive. If possible, call ahead to find out whether we are able to provide emergency care for your dog or cat.

In a situation where we can't fit an emergency appointment into our vet's schedule, we suggest visiting the 24/7 animal emergency hospital listed above.

  • What happens if my pet needs to stay in the hospital?

Some veterinary emergencies require intensive overnight care. At Shoreland Animal Hospital we provide overnight care for cats and dogs that require it.

While in our care, our dedicated team will treat your pet as if they were our own.

  • What types of animals do you treat?

Our emergency veterinarians are mostly experienced with cats and dogs but might be able to see other small animals, such as birds and rodents, in serious situations.
